“I am honoring Gloria Steinem, who died yesterday. She spent her life fighting for women and girls, and we must continue her work.”
Official Congressional Record

Mr. Speaker, I rise in honor of Gloria Steinem, who died yesterday at her home in New York City at the age of 92. Gloria devoted each breath of her life to securing a better future for women and girls in this country and beyond. In 1972, she helped to bring Ms. Magazine into the world and helped to build a movement. The Ms. Foundation for Women put resources directly into community organizations, led by and fighting for a more just future for women and girls. I know this because I came of age at that time. When I was 19 years old, working with young women surviving the underground street economy, Gloria directly supported that work and stood with us. She is one of the reasons that I am in this Chamber today. Her family asked that we light a candle. I will. We must continue to keep her fight and that light moving.
