Ban Data Centers in Residential Communities

The House debated a call to ban data centers in residential communities and to stop federal funding for Flock surveillance cameras. Rep. Ro Khanna said communities should be able to reject data centers, that the government should protect people’s privacy from tech companies and police tracking, and that the country should support innovation without becoming what he called a surveillance state. He also criticized what he described as the extraction of natural resources by tech companies.Written by AI from the debate. Updated .

“I want to ban data centers in neighborhoods and stop federal funding for Flock surveillance cameras. Communities should have the right to reject data centers, and the government should protect people's privacy from tech companies and police tracking.”
Official Congressional Record

Mr. Speaker, today, I am calling to ban data centers in residential communities and to ban Federal funding for Flock cameras. We can’t have a surveillance state in America. We didn’t fight a revolution to be ruled by tech billionaires. Americans are for innovation but not for the extraction of natural resources. Americans are for safety but not for the abuse of their privacy. We need guardrails on this technology. Communities should have the right to say ``no’’ to a data center being shoved down their throats, and we should have the right for women not to be surveilled by Flock cameras by rogue police officers. As a Representative of Silicon Valley, I am calling for democratic accountability of this technology revolution. We the people should call the shots.
